Although it's been quiet and muggy with some peeks of sunshine for most of the day on Sunday, June 25, scattered showers and thunderstorms began forming in the middle of the afternoon.
Isolated storm activity will continue at times through the evening.
"Not everywhere will see a shower or storm today, but if one tracks across your area, you can expect a brief burst of heavy rainfall," the National Weather Service said.
Lightning strikes from some of the storms have been reported as of 3 p.m. Sunday.
More widespread severe storms is expected for much of the area on Monday, June 26, with isolated tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds gusts of 60 miles per hour or more possible, especially in areas farthest south in the region.
Hail could be around 1 inch in diameter, the National Weather Service said in a Hazardous Weather Statement issued on Sunday morning.
